Pope & Pruitt Win Big at Crappie USA Tournament on Lake Norman, NC

Lake Norman, NC, 3/31/01: "We had 19 Wittnauer and 23 Amateur Teams competing for $3315 on Lake Norman," says Crappie USA Regional Director, Bill Shular. "The weather was a mixed bag ranging from a perfect morning for fishing to severe thunderstorms. With wind, hard rain, and water conditions from clear to dingy, the anglers fished hard for a place at the Cabela’s Classic this fall."

Randy Pope from Hickory, NC and Jerry Pruitt from Vale, NC weighed in 10 fish to top the scales at 11.19 pounds. Shooting piers with tiny white/chartreuse Lindy Little Nippers and bright orange/chartreuse Quiver jigs put $1700 in their pockets for First Place in the Wittnauer Watch Division and First Place Amateur Division.

The Granite Falls, NC team of Kenneth Bumgarner and Mark Sherrill took Second Place Wittnauer and Second Place Amateur with 9.71 pounds caught slow-trolling minnow-tipped yellow jigs eight to 12 feet deep and shooting 1/32-ounce homemade jigs at piers. They netted $750.

Stokes McClellan from Huntersville, NC and Adam McClellan from Denver, NC slow-trolled Tripple Ripple jigs and Sliders at 24 feet to win Third Place Wittnauer. Their fish weighed 8.93 pounds and brought $300.

The $200 Fourth Place Wittnauer was won with 8.88 pounds caught by Shon Roberts and Robert Roberts from Danville, VA. They also won the Regional Drawing.

The Stanley, NC team of Curtis Bumgarner and Rick Warlick caught 9.16 pounds for Third Place Amateur and a 1.34-pounder that earned them Second Place Big Fish for a total winnings of $379.50.

First Place Big Fish, a 1.37-pounder worth $185.50 was caught by Jimmy Bundrick and Jason Bundrick. They fished eight feet deep over 20 feet of water with junebug/chartreuse Crappie Delight jigs tipped with minnows.

Coleman Mundy and Brandon Mundy from Huntersville, NC won the Adult/Youth competition with 5.17 pounds.
