POPE/PRUITT & LUNDY/POPE TEAMS WIN ON W. SCOTT KERR LAKE, NC
W. Scott Kerr Lake, NC - 4/13/02: Tournament Director, Bill Shular says, "It rained hard on tournament morning and then drizzled past noon. The water was clear to dingy and the surface temperature was 65 degrees. We had eight Semi-Pro teams and 18 Amateur teams compete for the $2,450 payback.
"Kerr has a lot of big crappie and a lot of small crappie with not many in between. We had four fish weighing more than two pounds. One weighed 3.21 pounds, making it the third heaviest Mitchell Reels Big Fish caught in Region II since I’ve been Tournament Director. Anglers said you could hear the team hollering from miles down the lake."
First Place: Randy Pope from Hickory, NC and Jerry Pruitt from Vale, NC took second place last week on Badin Lake. They moved up a notch this week to take home $700. They fished deep off the piers and submerged brush 10 feet down using Little Lindy Little Nippers and white and chartreuse Timber Rock Jigs. They caught most of their fish with the pier-shooting technique, and weighed in 11.91 pounds.
Second Place: The Shelby, NC team of Billy Pruett and Steve Putnam won $400 for an 8.38-pound stringer. This team weighed in the winning Mitchell Reels Big Fish of 3.21 pounds. That big’un added $140 to their winnings. Fish Getters Wide Tail, Charlie Brewer Slider Black Glow Tails, and K-Grub in John Deere green fished eight to 12 feet deep along drops between 18 and 30 feet deep put these guys in second.
Third Place: Danville, VA team of Shon Roberts and Robert Roberts put 6.29 pounds of crappie on the scales for a $200 payday. They trolled in dingy water eight to 12 feet deep over 15- to 20-foot depths with pink and chartreuse Kalin Jigs. They also landed the second place Mitchell Reels Big Fish that weighed 2.29 pounds and padded their check with an extra $60.
First Place: Virginia team of Ricky Lundy from Woodlawn and Robert Pope from Elk Creek fished four to 10 feet deep off the bank around tree tops with Southern Pro chartreuse and black jigs tipped with minnows. Their catch of 4.70 pounds earned them $600.
Second Place: Mike Beard and Roger Josey from Maiden, NC weighed in 4.51 pounds for $250. They trolled eight to 10 feet deep with Charlie Brewer’s pink and pearl Sliders and Southern Pro blue and black jigs.
Third Place: Elkin, NC team of Jimmie Harris and Avery West fish minnow-tipped jigs eight to 10 feet deep over 20-foot depths to weigh in 4.24 pounds worth $100.
Adult/Youth Winners: Darren Slides and Landon Bryant from Lenoir, NC.
Winner Regional Drawing: Carl Rimmer and Jonathan Rimmer from Roxboro, NC.
Winner of Boat Drawing at Classic: David Perrel from Germanton, NC.
