Single pole jigging brings success for Crappie USA Anglers
Saturday October 19, 2002-As many anglers this year have been very successful using spider rig methods, anglers at the Crappie USA Lake Murray tournament used single pole jigging to bring in their winning weights. Nearly all the teams reported catching their fish in deeper water in brushpiles on beautiful Lake Murray. The lake is currently dropping to winter pool, which in normal conditions would hold these fish in deeper water.
The following is a list of the top teams and big fish winners in the tournament:
First Place - Russell Anderson of Saluda, SC - Weight: 12.46 pounds - Winnings: $500.00
Russell fishing alone found fish up shallow in a river channel fishing in 2 feet of water fishing wood. Russell one of the only anglers catching fish in shallow water was using a single pole with yellow and white jigs.
Second Place - Kinney Goff of Batesburg, SC & Terry Shealy of Leesville, SC - Weight: 12.13 pounds - Winnings: $300.00
The second place team was fishing over brushpiles in 20-25 feet of water using minnows and chartreuse and yellow jigs.
Third Place - Gary Phillips of Leesville, SC & George Cooper of Prosperity, SC - Weight: 10.78 pounds - Winnings: $200.00
Phillips and Cooper where fishing in 18-25 feet of water catching their fish suspended at 14 feet. They where fishing brushpiles using minnows and smoke colored jigs.
Top Male/Female Team - Joseph & Janette Carter of Gilbert, SC - Weight: 1.76 pounds.
First Place - Kenny Eargle of Leesville, SC & Sonny Bundrick of Little Mountain, SC - Weight: 15.03 pounds - Winnings: $750.00
The team was using Challenger split tail chartreuse jigs in 18 feet of water. Their fish were suspended in 14 feet and were all caught early.
Second Place - Ricky Cannon & Larry Cannon of Chapin, SC - Weight: 13.1 pounds - Winnings: $600.00
The Cannons were fishing in 20-25 feet of water with their fish suspended over brushpiles using orange jigs in the clear water of the lower end of the lake.
Third Place - Leonard & Rena Frick of Leesville, SC - Weight: 11.93 pounds - Winnings: $400.00
Leonard and Rena were fishing brush in 5 to 25 feet of water. They caught fish at nearly all depths on jigs and minnows.

First Place - Kenny Eargle of Leesville, SC & Sonny Bundrick of Little Mountain, SC - Weight: 2.2 pounds - Winnings: $185.50
Second Place - Ricky & Larry Cannon of Chapin, SC - Weight: 2.01 pounds - Winnings: $79.50
Stats for the Tournament:
Total # of teams - 29. Amateur - 17, Semi-Pro - 12.
Weather - Saturday morning 46 degrees, clear with light winds. By afternoon 75 degrees and sunny with light winds.
Water - Clear and 72 degrees. Lake was down by 15 feet and still dropping to winter pool.
Fish-Holding in deeper water due to falling depth.
In the Amateur division 13 of 17 teams weighed in fish.
In the Semi-Pro division all 12 teams weighed in fish.
