Texas Team Takes Second Win On The Trail At Tawakoni
(Matura/Smith On A Roll In Crappie USA Tour)

It's early in the tour where 37 events in 19 states will round out the year in Crappie USA. There's a lot of fishing left to do but the dynamic duo of A.J. Matura of Chandler, TX and partner Bill Smith of Edgewood, TX have a bit of their own March Madness. They chalked up their second victory of the season last week (March 20) with a win at Lake Tawakoni. They won another event at Louisiana's Lake Bistineau earlier this month.

Their 10-fish limit of crappie weighing 12.98 pounds earned them $700 and would have paid them another check for $600 had they also entered the Wittnauer Division. Using blue/chartreuse scale head jigs, the duo fished buck brush in only 2 1/2 foot depths or less.

Second place went to Jeff Heuman of Denton, TX and Wally Marshall of Garland, TX for a 10-fish limit weighing 12.23 pounds. While they did not have the heaviest stringer in the tournament, the did win more money--$950--than the first place team as they entered both Regular and Wittnauer Divisions, placing first in the latter. They fished clear skirted jigs containing black pepper specks in shallow stick-ups and weeds.

Third place went to Jimmy Millsap and Jackie JayRoe, both of Royse City, TX for a 10-fish limit weighing 11.63 pounds earning them $550. They fished Southern Pro jigs in shallow water. Fourth place went to Paul Obier of Frisco, TX and Marty Davis of Wylie, TX for a 10-fish limit weighing 9.30 pounds earning them $225.

The DieHard Big Fish Award went to W.T. Tibbit of Jacksonville, AR and partner Jody Melvin of Sherwood, AR for a 2.68 pound slab crappie which earned them $186 and a DieHard Marine deep cycle battery.

Next stop in Region 4 is Oklahoma's Thunderbird Lake (April 10); followed by Lake of the Cherokee (April 17); Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks (April 24); Kansas' El Dorado Lake (May 1); Missouri's Mark Twain (May 8) and Truman Reservoir (May 15). The Region 4 $35,000 fishoff will be at Oklahoma's Lake Eufaula on June 5th.
