Crappie USA Tournament Results for the Tombigbee Waterway at Columbus, Mississippi
This past Saturday Crappie USA held a qualifying event on the Tombigbee Waterway at Columbus, MS. The Tombigbee Waterway is an excellent fishery and will be the site of the 2007 Region 1 regional event. The anglers in this event were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the regional event on April 28, 2007 along with the prestigious Cabela's Crappie USA Classic to be held next September.
Semi-Pro Division Results
Taking first place was the team of Gilford Sipes of Moody, AL and Coy Sipes of Pell City, AL with a total weight of 8.86 pounds and receiving $800.00 for first place. Gilford and Coy slow trolled in the Aberdeen pool using minnows and road runners in 14 feet of water. Teams found a slow bite on Saturday, but Gilford and Coy used a technique of stopping over brush, waiting for as much as 2 minutes to induce the bite.
Second place went to Terry Elliott of Greenfield, TN and Jeff Elliott of Dyersburg, TN with 8.6 pounds. The Elliott's were fishing just South of the Highway 50 Bridge, slow trolling brown TeeZur jigs along with brown and orange Southern Pro Tubes in 9-12 feet on break lines. Terry and Jeff took home a check for $500.00 for second place.
In third place were Steve and Kevin McElroy of Muscadine, AL with 8.51 pounds and receiving $350.00. Steve and Kevin started out slow trolling minnows then switched to pulling crankbaits to catch the bigger fish in the gravel pit area.
This years Cabela's Crappie USA classic amateur winners Greg Beard and Ruel Carpenter of Booneville, MS took fourth place with a weight of 7.94 pounds.
Amateur Division Results
In first place in the amateur division was the hometown team of Larry Baldridge and Willis Bonner of Columbus, MS with a total weight of 9.17 pounds. Larry and Willis were fishing in 2-3 feet of water all day in creeks, vertical jigging black back Bass Assassin jigs in wood. Larry and Willis took home $400.00 for first place.
Second place went to Joey and Bobby Clark of Parrish, AL with a weight of 7.53 pounds and receiving $200.00. The Clark team was fishing the gravel pit area vertical jigging in 18 feet of water, working brush 14-16 feet deep. Joey and Bobby were using Sliders and minnows with their fish holding tight to the cover of the brush.
Taking third place was the team of Charlie Kent of Baldwyn, MS and Danny Lawrence of Conway, AR with a weight of 7.52 pounds. Charlie and Danny were vertical jigging in 20-22 feet of water using white jigs in brush. The team received $100.00.
In fourth was the one person team of Chuck Justice of Louisville, MS with 7.48 pounds.
Fifth place went to the one person team of Eric Fenstemaker of Marysville, TN with 7.33 pounds.
Congratulations to all the teams fishing this event. The first place team in each division have now qualified for the Cabela's Crappie USA Classic along with the top 10 teams in each division advancing to the regional event which will have a major payback. Big Fish Award
Taking big fish of the event was the team of Terry Elliott of Greenfield, TN and Jeff Elliott of Dyersburg, TN with a 2.1 pound crappie and receiving $119.00. Second place in the big fish contest was the team of Charlie Kent of Baldwyn, MS and Danny Lawrence of Conway, AR with a 2.03 pound crappie and taking home $51.00.
Crappie USA Kids Fishing Rodeo
In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 4-$5,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela's Crappie USA Classic.
Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed near $220,000.00 to the "Crappie Kids" Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA "Kids Fishing Rodeos".
