2009 Cabela's Crappie USA Classic Results From the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway At Columbus, MS

This past Friday and Saturday Crappie USA held the 2009 Cabela's Crappie USA Classic on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway at Columbus, Mississippi. Anglers from 18 different states were competing for not only cash and prizes, but the opportunity to be crowned the 2009 Cabela's Crappie USA Classic Champions in both divisions.

"Fridays fishing was a little tough, but Saturday brought a new day with bluebird skies, mild winds and lots of good fish", said Crappie USA CEO Darrell Van Vactor. Van Vactor added that the teams had a good time and enjoyed the hospitality during the 4-day event at Columbus, Mississippi.

Semi-Pro Division Results

Taking first place was the team of John Woods of Newbern, Tennessee and Tracy McIntosh of Dyersburg, Tennessee weighing in a 2-day total of 21.22 pounds. John and Tracy were fishing Aberdeen Lake in 2 feet of water catching over 70 fish on Saturday using chartreuse and black/chartreuse Southern Pro jigs. For first place the team earned a new 188 VX Ranger boat rig powered by an Evinrude 150HP engine along with a Minn Kota trolling motor and Humminbird electrics. The team also received $250.00 in cash by winning the Eagle Claw Bonus Award. Vee Ferguson of Ranger Boats was on hand to present the boat package to John and Tracy.

Second place went to Coy Sipes of Pell City, Alabama and Gilford Sipes of Moody, Alabama with a weight of 19.03 pounds and earning $5,000.00. Coy and Gilford were fishing Aliceville Lake in 9-12 feet of water using Blakemore Roadrunners with orange jigs on B'n'M Poles using Vicious line.

In third place was Steve Coleman and Ronny Capps of Tiptonville, Tennessee weighing in 17.01 pounds and earning $2,000.00. Steve and Ronny were slow trolling on Aliceville Lake using Southern Pro Lures with glow combinations on 14 foot B'n'M Poles using Vicious Line.

Mike Walters of West Milton, Ohio and Rick Solomon of Piqua, Ohio took fourth place with a weight of 16.51 pounds and earning $1,500.00. Mike and Rick were also fishing Aliceville Lake in 10-14 feet of water using black and chartreuse Southern Pro jigs on Eagle Claw Hooks.

Fifth place went to David Stancil of Oxford, Alabama and Earl Brink of Cummings, Georgia with a weight of 15.98 pounds and earning $1,000.00. David and Earl were fishing 15-18 feet of water on Aliceville Lake using white and pink Showdown jigs tipped with live bait.

First place in the Adult/Youth category was the 3-person team of Steve Ferguson of Puryear, Tennessee along with Joey and Levi Briggs of Dexter, Kentucky with a weight of 13.9 pounds and receiving a $500.00 savings bond from national sponsor Gooding Insurance.

First place in the Male/Female category was Lee and Carolyn Grover of Covington, Kentucky weighing in 11.81 pounds and receiving $500.00.

Amateur Division Results

In first place in the amateur division was Brian and Duffy Cleland of Decatur, Illinois with a total 2-day weight of 17.23 pounds. Brian and Duffy were fishing in 5-10 feet of water pushing green chartreuse Southern Pro jigs tipped with live bait on B'n'M Poles. The team received a new Ranger Boat with an Evinrude engine Minn Kota trolling motor and Humminbird electronics. Brian and Duffy also captured big fish of the event earning $1,000.00.

Second place went to the Columbus, Mississippi team of Larry Baldridge and Willis Bonner with a weight of 17.13 pounds and earning $3,000.00. Larry and Willis were vertical jigging on Aliceville Lake using blue/red Southern Pro jigs.

Taking third place was the Mt. Juliet, Tennessee team of Harold Maddux and Brian Oldham with a weight of 16.88 pounds and earning $1,400.00. Harold and Brian were fishing Aliceville Lake in 15-18 feet of water using Crappie Magnet jigs in a mustard color.

In fourth was the Centre, Alabama team of Glen Floyd and Mike Ward weighing in 16.47 and earning $1,000.00. Glen and Mike were using live bait in 10-12 feet of water on Aliceville Lake.

Fifth place went to the team of Chuck Justice of Louisville, Mississippi and Alton Reeves of Aberdeen, Mississippi weighing in 16.32 pounds and earning $800.00.

First place in the Adult/Youth category was the team of John and Matt Feagin of Mayfield, Kentucky. The team received a $500.00 savings bond from Gooding Insurance.

First place in the Female/Male category was the team of Ron and Barbara Hollingsworth of Clarksville, Ohio. Ron and Barbara earned $500.00 for first place in the Female/Male category in the Amateur Division.

Big Fish Award

Taking big fish of the event weighing 2.38 pounds was the team of Brian and Duffy Cleland of Decatur, Illinois. The team received $1,000.00 for big fish of the event. Second place in the big fish contest was the team of Greg Sullivan and Thomas Jenkins of Jasper, Alabama with a 2.03 pound crappie. The team received $500.00 for second biggest fish of the event.

The POP Culberson memorial award: $250.00 Cabela’s gift certificate for biggest fish each day.

Winners Friday were tied between the teams of Randy and Cindy Turner of Belknap, Illinois and Adam Mobbs and Carlton Teague of Gaylesville, Alabama each won $125.00 gift certificate from Cabela's. Winners Saturday were Brian and Duffy Cleland of Decatur, Illinois receiving a $250.00 Cabela’s gift certificate.

Young angler of the Year Award: Matthew Feagin was presented the award by last year's winner Levi Briggs. Each won a $50.00 gift certificate from Cabela’s.
