Crappie USA Tournament Results for Florida's Lake Talquin
(Georgia Anglers do Well at Talquin)
This past Saturday January 23rd Crappie USA held a qualifying event at the Whippoorwill Sportsman's Lodge in Quincy, Florida on Florida's Talquin Lake. These anglers were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela's Crappie USA Classic to be held this Fall. Our next qualifying event will be held February 13th on Caddo Lake in Louisiana.
Mother nature gave these anglers a true challenge with nearly 7 inches of rain on Thursday creating murky to muddy water condition on tournament day.
Semi-Pro Division Results
Taking first place was the team of Danny Cannon of Toomsboro, Georgia and Billy Williams of Cochran, Georgia with a weight of 11.26 pounds and earning $1,100.00. Danny and Billy were long lining the Iron Curtain area using Hal Flies and Big Bite Baits jigs catching their fish 11-12 feet deep in 18-20 feet of water. The team only caught 10-12 fish during the event, but with a 2.22 pound kicker fish the team was able to capture first plus along with big fish of the event. Teams may only bring their 7 largest live fish to the weigh in scales.
Second place went to Jared Leverette and John Staton of Quincy, Florida with a total weight of 11.08 pounds and earning $650.00. Jared and John were long line trolling the mouth of the river using AWD Tennessee Shad to catch 33 fish in 15 feet of water with the fish holding 10-12 feet deep.
In third place was the team of Jade and Jason Leverette of Quincy, Florida with 10.62 pound of fish earning $450.00. Jade and Jason also fished the Iron Curtain area long line trolling butterscotch/chartreuse colored AWD and Culprit baits catching their fish near bottom in 15-25 feet of water. The team caught a total of 50 fish during the event.
Roy Capes of Cordele, Georgia and Robert Harris of Warner Robbins, Georgia took fourth place with a weight of 10.52 pounds.
Fifth place went to Tommy and Cristy Sellers of Macon, Georgia with a total weight of 10.02 pounds.
Amateur Division Results
First place in the amateur division was Fred Walker of Lizella, Georgia and Rick Howard of Warner Robbins, Georgia with a weight of 9.26 pounds and earning $600.00. Fred and Rick were long line trolling the Iron Curtain area in 15-20 feet of water with their fish suspended in 12-14 feet of water. The team was using Southern Pro and AWD baits catching most of their fish in the afternoon. The team only caught 12 throughout the day.
Second place went to Robert Sellers of Juliette, Georgia and Tommy Ryals of Danville, Georgia with a weight of 7.85 pounds and earning $360.00. Robert and Tommy were fishing the channels just before the Iron Curtain area long lining several colors of curl tail jigs. The team caught about 1 fish per hour with a total of 8 fish caught for the day.
Taking third place was the team of Scott Williams and Jacob Sapp of Cochran, Georgia with a weight of 7.81 pounds.
In fourth was the team of David Dieckman of Coolidge, Georgia and Mark Stephens of Ochlocknee, Georgia with a weight of 7.29 pounds.
Fifth place went to the team of Eron Hefferman of Warner Robbins, Georgia and Tom Pfost of Kathleen, Georgia with a weight of 6.6 pounds.

Big Fish Award
Taking big fish of the event was the team of Danny Cannon of Toomsboro, Georgia and Billy Williams of Cochran, Georgia with a 2.22 pound crappie and earning $213.50 for big fish of the event. Second place in the big fish contest was the team of Jared Leverette and John Staton of Quincy, Florida with a 2.14 pound crappie and earning $91.50.
Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo
In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$2,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela's Crappie USA Classic.

Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $270,000.00 to the "Crappie Kids" Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA "Kids Fishing Rodeos".

Stats for the Tournament:
Weather- On Thursday 7 inches of rain pounded the area leaving stained to muddy waters for the anglers to fish. Tournament morning brought cloudy skies, 50 degrees with winds 8-10 MPH. Weigh in time brought sunny skies, 68 degrees with 8-10 MPH winds.
Water-The water was murky to muddy and 54 degrees.
