Crappie USA Tournament Results For Patoka Lake at Jasper, Indiana

Patoka Lake played host to the Crappie USA Event this past Saturday, May 20, 2017. Over 90 anglers from several states were competing for not only the $7,400.00 in cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabala's Crappie USA Classic. This year's classic will be held October 26 – 28, 2017 on Kentucky & Barkley Lakes at Paris, Tennessee.

Pro Division Results

Saturday morning saw strong thunderstorms that hit the lake at 9:00am, with over an inch falling in 45 minutes. Thankfully the skies cleared until the weigh-in and the storms hit again. Temperatures were in the 70's and light winds for most of the day. Doug Laake of Ferdinand, Indiana and Ryan Rohl of Birdseye, Indiana took first place in the Pro Division with a total weight of 6.90 pounds and earning $1,800.00, plus an additional $500.00 Ranger Cup Bonus and $590.00 Big Fish. The team fished up river finding their good ones on a beaver pile by pitching floats with jigs and large size shiner minnows in 5 – 7 feet of water. They stated the larger size minnows kept the smaller fish from biting and saved time looking for the larger fish. The team caught 60 fish for the day which included Big Fish of the event weighing 1.90 pounds.

David Bowser of Marion, Indiana and Mike Morrison of Muncie, Indiana took second place with a total weight of 5.83 pounds and earned $1,000.00. The team fished the lower end of the lake in 9 – 15 feet of water vertically jigging orange/chartreuse jigs tipped with minnows to catch over 50 fish for the day.

Taking third place were Henry and Jo Haley, both of Carmi, Illionis weighing in at 5.70 pounds and earning $700.00. The team vertically jigged over wood cover in 8 – 10 feet of water in the Walls Creek area of the lake using mostly live bait to land 40 fish for the event.

Bret Cunningham of Seymour, Indiana and David Wright of Columbus, Indiana took fourth place with a total weight of 4.58 pounds and earning $500.00. The team fished from Walls Creek to Kings Creek in various depths using mainly live bait to catch over 50 fish for the day.

Amateur Division Results

Daniel Reckelhoff of Huntingburg, Indiana and Ed Ploetner of Birdseye, Indiana took first place in the Amateur Division with a total weight of 3.04 pounds and earned $1,000.00. The team fished Walls Creek area of the lake in 17 feet of water using live bait over wood cover to catch between 35 – 50 fish on Saturday.

Taking second place was Steve Gentz of St. Louis, Missouri and Robert Brown of DeSoto, Missouri weighing in at 2.69 pounds and earning $500.00. The team fished the large bay close to Hoosier Hills Marina in 23 feet of water targeting suspended fish that were holding 14 feet deep on their electronics, to land 50 fish on Roadrunner heads tipped with live bait.

Kristina and Rick Hancock, both of Edinburgh, Indiana took third place of the event weighing in at 2.35 pounds and earned $400.00. The team fished up the Little Patoka River vertical jigging orange/chartreuse jigs tipped with minnows in 10 – 12 feet of water to land 50 total fish for the day.

In fourth place was Douglas Ault and Greg Davis, both of Brownstown, Indiana with a total weight of 2.16 pounds and earned $300.00. The team fished Painters Creek in 5 – 18 feet of water using Roadrunner jigs in several different colors to catch over 40 fish for the tournament.

Jim Handlin of Paris, Illinois and Jared Handlin of Brazil, Indiana took fifth place weighing in at 2.05 pounds and earned $200.00. The team fished several locations on the north end of the lake using chartreuse color jigs tipped with minnows in 15 – 25 feet of water to catch 40 fish on Saturday.
