Crappie USA Tournament Results For Old Hickory Lake, Gallatin, Tennessee

Old Hickory Lake played host to the Crappie USA Super Event this past weekend, March 23 – 24, 2018. Over 80 anglers from several states were competing for not only the $12,800 in cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabala's Crappie USA Classic. The Classic event will be October 3 – 6, 2018 on Lake Cumberland at Somerset, Kentucky and will have a guaranteed payout of $125,000 in cash and prizes. Pro Division Results

Friday saw early rain, with scattered showers throughout the day and winds at 10 -15mph. Saturday started with rain early, stopping for a good majority of the tournament and then beginning again at weighin time with temperatures in the mid 50's. It also saw Steve Ferguson of Puryear, TN and Daniel Harper of Murray, KY take first place in the Pro Division with a total weight of 22.55 pounds and earned $3,000, plus an additional $500 Ranger Cup Bonus and $100 Jenko Bonus. The team fished the middle of Old Hickory Lake, slow trolling double live bait rigs along 15 – 18 foot bank areas to catch over 60 fish for the weekend.

Harold Maddux and Brian Oldham, both of Mt. Juliet, TN took second place with a total weight of 21.06 pounds and earned $2,000. The team fished the middle of the lake area over man-made cover with fish holding tight to the wood cover. The team used Crappie Magnet jigs in assorted colors to land 20 fish for the event, stating that “the fish wanted the smaller jigs today, and they had to slow them down due to a more finesse bite.”

Taking third place were Shawn Gore and Joey Peck, both of Almo, KY weighing in at 20.27 pounds and earning $1,000. The team fished the main lake around Drakes Creek over wood cover using feather jigs in the smaller 1/16 ounce size, vertical fishing in 18 – 30 feet of water to catch 45 fish for the 2-day tournament.

Dale Thompson and Eddie Milby, both of Greensburg, KY took fourth place with a total weight of 18.42 pounds. Unfortunately, the team left before the awards ceremony and we were unable to learn their secrets.

Amateur Division Results

Mike Wantz of New Castle, IN and Rusty Byard of Muncie, IN took first place in the Amateur Division with a total weight of 18.60 pounds and earned $1,500, plus $520 Big Fish. The team fished Station Camp area, spider rigging in 16 – 18 feet of water with tube jigs tipped with live bait to catch a total of 30 fish for the weekend, including Big Fish of the event weighing 2.25 pounds.

Taking second place was Rudy Bostelman and Robert Gleaves, both of Mt. Juliet, TN weighing in at 18.53 pounds and earning $1,000, plus an additional $225 for 2nd place Big Fish The team fished Drakes Creek and in front of the dam area using jigs on Friday and live bait on Saturday in 35 feet of water to land 55 fish, including 2nd place Big Fish, weighing 2.16 pounds.

Richard Wright of Irvine, KY and Wayne Adams of Berea, KY took third place of the event weighing in at 16.42 pounds and earned $500, plus an additional $100 Xtreme Bait Tank Bonus. The team fished the area close to the dam, spider-rigging in 18 – 25 feet of water with red/chartreuse and white/blue tube jigs to catch a total of 25 fish for the weekend.

Gregory Oaks of Waynesburg, KY and Shane Yocum of Hustonville, KY took fourth place weighing in at 16.37 pounds and earning $400, plus an additional $125 Ranger Cup Bonus. The team fished Station Camp area on flats, close to steep ledges using Striped Doublelicious jigs in shad and sometimes tipping with minnows to land 25 fish for the event. Taking fifth place was Wayne Goodall of Mt. Juliet, TN weighing in at 16 pounds and earning $200. Wayne trolled Jenko crank baits in chartreuse color on the main lake areas to catch over 50 fish for the weekend.
