Mike Powell and Steve Rockwood Jr win CUSA at Grand Lake/St. Marys
(The teams 1.86 pound slab also won Big Fish of the event. )
Louisville, KY – April 28, 2018 – Crappie anglers from several states traveled to Grand Lake/St. Marys, St. Marys, OH to participate in a Crappie USA (CUSA) Super Event. Local and traveling anglers fished for cash, prizes, and an opportunity to compete at the 2018 CUSA Classic which will feature a guaranteed payout of $125,000 in cash and prizes.
The anglers had to deal with inclement weather and a rather cold two days of fishing. Friday, April 27 was characterized by some rain and 40 mph winds from the southwest with temperatures in the 60’s. a cold front moved in for Saturday that took the temperature into the 30’s early before warming to a crisp 42 degrees with 15 mph winds from the north.
A total of 68 boats fished the popular event, 20 in the Pro Division and 48 in the Amateur Division. A total of $ 14,500.00 was distributed to the winners.
Pro Division Results
Mike Powell, from New Knoxville, OH, and Steve Rockwood Jr, from Wapalconeta, OH claimed the top prize in the Pro Division with a bag of 15.66 pounds that included the Big Fish of the tournament.
Powell and Rockwood fished the north end of the lake in canals. They targeted submerged brush to vertical jig. Purple/black jigs were used to catch about 30 fish for
the weekend. Their fish were mostly pre-spawn females.
Their big fish was an 1.86-pound pound slab that added $ 925.00 to their earnings which totaled $3,925.00 for their weekend of fishing.
Second place went to the team of Jason Koesters, New Bremen, OH and Jake Hengstler, Botkins OH, with a weight of 14.11 pounds.
The NK Telco sponsored team fished both north and south ends of the lake, In each case they were targeting creeks searching for cover in shallow water. They used Big Bite jigs in black/chartreuse to catch 20 to 25 fish for the weekend and earn $2,000.00.
Rossford Ohio’s Greg Rutschilling and Matt Wente from New Bremen, OH, brought in the bacon for third place honors. They caught a total weight of 12.95 pounds of Crappie to earn $1,000.00.
They caught their fish shooting docks and pontoons in 5 feet of water. They fished both the north and south ends of the lake using twister tails jigs in black/chartreuse to catch more than 40 crappie in the two days of tournament fishing.
Jeff Tobins and Michael Bell, both from St Marys, OH, were the fourth-place winners. They had a bag of 12.77 pounds to claim their spot.
Tobins and Bell used red/chartreuse jigs to shoot docks and pontoons. They fished all over the lake and caught more than 50 fish for the weekend. They used a Talon Shallow water anchor on their boat and earned a $250 Talon Bonus
Amateur Division Results
The Amateur Division was won by Randy Waterman from New Bremen, OH and Garrett Waterman from Ft Loramie, OH. Team Waterman weighed 14.48 pounds to claim top honors in the Amateur Division.
They fished the southside of the lake in brush in no more than 1 foot of water. Their jig of choice was green. They caught a total of 30 fish for the weekend and earned a check for $2,000.
"The fish were moving in and building nests,” they stated. “They are getting ready for the spawn."
Second place went to Shad Stant and Doug Pond. The Ohio anglers, from Mendon and Ohio City weighed 13.76 pounds to earn $1,000.00.
Stant and Pond fished the southside of the lake. They were shooting docks and finding fish holding in brush. They used black/chartreuse jigs to catch more than 40 fish for the weekend.
Jacob Waterman and Tony Waterman, both of New Bremen, OH, finished in third place. They had a total weight of 13.55 pounds.
Waterman and Waterman fished the south end of the lake in shallow water, They used jigs in a variety of colors to catch 50-60 fish for the weekend and earn $700.
“Color did not matter very much,” reported Jacob. “Just getting it in front of them did."
The fourth-place spot went to Herbert Richey from St Marys, OH and Lonnie Richey from Celina, OH. They had a total weight of 13.33 pounds to earn $500.00.
They were using handmade feather and hair jigs on the south end of the lake to catch more than 40 fish for the weekend.
The fifth-place team of Jordan Voigt and Bob Swartz, both from Celina OH, weighed a total of 13.12 pounds to claim their spot.
Voigt and Swartz targeted 5-foot-deep areas holding brush on the north end of the lake. The used shad color jigs to catch about 40 fish for the two-day tournament.
Darrell Van Vactor sent special thank yous to NK Telco, Brushpile Crappie TV, and all the local sponsors who made the event possible. He noted that the winners of this event are eligible to win an additional $5000.00 bonus at the Classic sponsored by NK Telco and Brushpile Crappie TV.
The 2018 CUSA Classic will be held October 3 – 6, 2018 on Lake Cumberland at Somerset, KY. It will feature a guaranteed payout of $125,000 in cash and prizes.
