CUSA Pro Division Victory on Lake Fork, TX goes to Gann and Froebe
(Green and Scottmask take Amateur Division. )
Louisville, KY – March 8, 2020 – Crappie anglers from five states traveled to Lake Fork, TX to participate in the March 7, 2020 Crappie USA (CUSA) event. Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s presented the tournament for local and traveling anglers. Competitors were vying for cash, prizes, and an opportunity to compete at the 2020 CUSA Classic which will feature a guaranteed payout of $125,000 in cash and prizes.
The air temperature on tournament day ranged from a low of 43 to a high of 64 degrees. Partly cloudy skies and mostly light winds from the north made for a comfortable day of fishing. Double digits weights were the norm of the day with more than 17 pounds needed to win.
A total of 18 boats fished the Lake Fork event—13 in the Pro Division and 5 in the Amateur Division. A total of $4,150 was distributed to the winners.
Pro Division Results
Clay Gann and Todd Froebe claimed the top spot in the Pro Division at Lake Fork. They teamed up to bring 17.06 pounds to the scales and earn the first-place prize of $1,500 to which they added the $100 Jenko Bonus.
Gann and Froebe were pitching black hand-tied jigs in the far south end of creek channels in about 18 to 22 feet of water.
The runner-up spot went to Dan Langston and Doug Johnson. They brought in a total weight of 16.52 pounds to earn a check for $800.
Langston and Johnson fished the north part of the lake using 2-inch crawfish for bait.
The team fished vertical in 8 to 17 feet of water. They caught their biggest fish right off the bottom, but some fish were suspended. They noted that they experienced a very aggressive bite.
The third spot went to Weylin Shanks, from Camdenton, MO and Gary Filbeck from Iberia, MO. Their third-place bag weighed in at 16.28 pounds to earn them a check for $500.
Shanks and Filbeck fished the north and west arm of the lake using homemade hair jigs. They fished with Jenko rods. Their best colors were gold/crawfish on a pearl/orange head in about 8 feet of water.
Amateur Division Results
First place in the Amateur Division went to Ronnie Green from Bridgeport, TX and Kim Scottmask from Alevo, TX. Their winning bag weighed 16.19 pounds and earned them a check for $700. They added the $500 Talon Bonus.
Green and Scottmask were pitching black/chartreuse Stump Bugs in about 40 feet of water.
Jordan Sanders from Quinland, TX and Jason Holleman from Ft. Worth, TX claimed the runner-up spot in the Amateur Division. Their weight of 12.68 pounds earned them a check for $300.
Sanders and Holleman used Garman Livescope to locate fish and then tempted them with Limits Tackle jigs. They were fishing in 20 feet of water finding the crappies suspended at 15 to 17 feet.
Big Fish ended with a tie between Clay Gann and Alan Dyer. They split the Big Fish pot with equivalent weights of 2.81 pounds. Kevin Jones from Cedar Hill, MO won the $250 Ranger Cup Bonus.
Tournament director Paul Alpers sent special thanks to the Emory Economic Development group, Keeley Roam, Jimmy Leonard, the Minnow Bucket (weigh in site), the Best Western hotel, and all the local sponsors.

The CUSA Classic Championship will be held October 22 – 24, 2020 at Green River Lake, Columbia, KY. The 2020 Classic, presented by Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's, features a guaranteed payout of $125,000 in cash and prizes.
